PSEG Long Island Celebrates National Mentoring Month

Mentors play a crucial role in both personal and professional development. From providing guidance to support and inspiration, they serve as trusted advisors who help foster growth and help individuals reach their full potential.

Many PSEG Long Island employees serve as mentors for both students trying to define their own career paths and professionals seeking guidance on how to advance in their careers. January is National Mentoring Month, and today we profile two PSEG Long Islanders who volunteer as mentors on their own time: Veronica Isaac and Amy Di Leo.

As someone who did not have a mentor growing up, I know how it feels to feel lost and not have anyone to turn to for guidance,” said Isaac. “It became my personal mission to help others – particularly women who are trying to pave their own path.” – Veronica Isaac, Manager of Customer and Community Partnerships

Although Isaac didn’t have a mentor growing up, she experienced the benefits of mentorship as an adult, which inspired her to dedicate her personal time to mentoring others today. In fact, the manager of Customer and Community Partnerships has been mentoring individuals across different generations for the past five years. Demonstrating that anyone can benefit from support – no matter what career level they’re in or what position they may hold – she currently mentors a professional accountant, who she connected with through her sorority, and a teenage student she met during a college tour.

“As someone who did not have a mentor growing up, I know how it feels to feel lost and not have anyone to turn to for guidance,” said Isaac. “It became my personal mission to help others – particularly women who are trying to pave their own path.” This passion became evident when Isaac took a mid-career professional under her wing in 2020. “She was dealing with workplace adjustments,” she explained, saying that COVID was impacting the workplace, and the world, at the time. “She needed support in trying to map out her career, and we’ve been in talks ever since, addressing challenges in the workplace and how to move up.” Isaac connected with a college student when they struck up a conversation in 2023 about the student’s future and the options available to her. “I appreciate the opportunity to share my knowledge and experiences with her and see this young student grow and develop as a result,” said Isaac. “We have been communicating ever since.”

Di Leo, Senior Communications Generalist, also mentors a student. She was paired with a college junior last fall as part of the Moxxie Mentoring Foundation’s Junior Moxxie program for women – our own Katy Tatzel, Director of Corporate Communications, serves on the board of directors – which connects Long Island female higher education students with mentors in the workforce. The Moxxie program runs the length of a school year. Di Leo’s hope is to be a trusted advisor to her mentee, who requested to focus on networking, interviewing and communication skills during their time together.

An adjunct professor at a local college, Di Leo draws from her teaching experience when mentoring. “Mentoring shares similarities with teaching, but goes deeper,” she said. “Part of my role as a mentor is to help my mentee realize her goals. In doing so, I learn as well.”  Di Leo went on to say that she finds developing a personal connection and relationship with her mentee to be deeply fulfilling. “I love being a cheerleader and supporter for my mentee, and I feel a sense of pride witnessing her grow and achieve. It’s beyond satisfying.”

Please join us in thanking Veronica and Amy for realizing the value in mentoring and dedicating their personal time toward helping others who seek self-improvement or support.
